Saudi Arabia and the Gulf: external

Summary: the current success of the Iranian peace offensive, the new international approach to Syrian chemical weapons and perhaps the civil war, and US withholding some military aid to Egypt implying a cooling of the alliance between the US and its Gulf allies.

China and the Middle East

China’s investment and trade in the Middle East and Africa has been growing rapidly. This is part of the world-wide growth of Chinese exports, but specifically reflects the requirement for energy. China is heavily dependent on OPEC producers and expected to overtake the US as the world’s largest oil importer by 2015.
