Interesting piece. Would like to know more about how the author views the Saudi role in Egypt, and how that fits into his framework.
The policy of Saudi Arabia has diverged greatly from the UAE, which became apparent in Egypt’s 2022 financial crisis. The Saudis initially provided some funds to prevent a complete collapse but unlike the UAE have refrained from large investments. This can be attributed to Saudi inward economic focus and its increasing role as a status quo power. While there is willingness by the Saudis to ally with Sisi there is much less willingness to invest heavily in a regime that has failed to deliver on promises of acting as security guarantor for the Gulf. In other words, Sisi has shown himself to be an unreliable ally which would partially explain the closer relationship between Pakistan and the Saudis.
