  1. Paradoxically, the headlines about “flip-flop” and “Saudi threats” will strengthen the hand of those who are pressing governments in the US and UK to review their policies toward Saudi Arabia, for example on weapon sales.

    Excellent post. Many thanks. On the last point, an unfortunate precedent was set a few weeks ago when the Council failed to back up the SG’s utterly pertinent remarks on the Western Sahara. It may not have been coincidence that very shortly afterwards Netanyahu announced that the Golan Heights are an inseparable and permanent part of Israel (though actually until very shortly before the outbreak of the Syrian revolution he was quietly negotiating to give them back).
