  1. I loved the interview with Avi Shlaim, who I had the pleasure to appear on a panel with in Edinburgh. His connection to Iraq is powerful and sad to me, given my own family’s link to Basra. My father, around Avi’s age, still speaks fondly of their Jewish neighbours in Basra, who would call for my father, when he was a little boy, to help them with switching electrical things on and off on the Sabbath. They were family friends. What a cruel interruption 1948 (and, really, 1917) was for the Arab world. And we continue to pay the grisly price.
