MbS has spoken of returning Sa’udi Islam to a more moderate, pre-1979 situation (https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/oct/24/i-will-return-saudi-arabia-moderate-islam-crown-prince), although details have been sparse. It will be interesting to see whether MbS works to oppose Khan’s proposed step, or continues to support the current direction of travel. In addition to Pakistani Shi’a, there are Pakistani Christians and Hindus, making this an ideal locale for an experiment in moderation.
