George Joffé concentrates mainly on the Israel Palestine problem, and the contribution informal engagement made to resolve the problem of how to bring the PLO to the negotiating table. Should we now accept, as Jonathan Powell certainly would (in his book Talking to Terrorists he convincingly rebuts all the arguments against and argues that talking is the right thing to do), that we will probably have to contemplate negotiating with IS one day, or if IS is exterminated with whatever monster follows it? That will need a lot of empathy!
